Change Is Hard

…but change is certain.

Tunnel time

Katie here. Yes, I’m still around, someone’s got to supervise the little one, and who better than me, right? After all, I had a hand paw in finding her for mama and daddy, so I keep tabs on her just to make sure she’s following the rules I set up for the household more than fifteen years ago.

Piggy! My favorite tunnel toy!

But I can see that I might have to remind some of you that there is nothing new on earth. All the games that little Miss Penny has ‘invented’ I thought of first.

Penny’s favorite tunnel toy is Blue!

Yep. I heard mama tell the little one that I was the beautiful one, but she’s the smart one. Well. Let me remind you all that I outsmarted mama lots of times. And I have the stories to prove it.

I was also much more patient with mama and the camera than little Penny is.

But today let me share with you that mama kind of teared up the first time she tossed a toy in the tunnel and smartie-pants ran through the tunnel and brought it back.

Way to go little Penny!

Because, you see, that was one of my all time favorite games. And Penny plays it just like I did, even though mama and daddy didn’t teach her.

Piggy in the tunnel!

Well of course they didn’t. I have a direct line to Penny’s little brain and I’m always guiding her. So the next time you all think she’s so smart just remember where she gets it from. Yep, I’m never far away.

And please note that I posed on that spiral in the park first. Just saying.

I was there first.

Now go get mama a tissue, her eyes are leaking all over again.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. Well, it is pretty obvious that Penny gets her smarts from her big sister. Katie, you girls look so much alike–it is easy to see why your mama’s eyes are leaking. It is always such a treat for you to make a surprise appearance–but someone has to make sure that Penny follows the rules!

    • Penny looks so different than Katie to me, at least at this age. I am having a hard time remembering what Katie was like at 4 months. And I’m really curious what Penny will look like when her coat comes in. I’m pretty sure Penny is not into following the rules, but she’s just started puppy school, so I’m cutting her some slack.

  2. We know you will always be there for your mama AND for Penny –
Just as NAK and NAL will always be ‘here’ –

As for the leaky eyes….Penny’s furs will grow well with the extra moisture she’ll help dry!

  3. Katie, you are in our hearts, and in your mama’s heart forever … just like Penny is now. There’s plenty of room for love yes? You are so good at teaching Penny! She needs teaching that’s for sure. 🙂

  4. Aw…that’s so sweet of you Katie. I wondered how Mama and Daddy would be feeling seeing Penny do some of the same fun things that you did. It’s bittersweet. I’d be needing a tissue too. PS – it was fun to see you again, Katie. Thank you for stopping by!

  5. Katie you are the best! Of course you were just as smarter (probably smarter) than Penny. You are such a good big sister for teaching her how to do all the fun stuff and outsmart your mama.

    Miss you lots!

  6. Katie, it’s always a delight hearing from you! And yes, you’re being such a good big sis in helping Penny learn the ropes (and the tunnel!). That spiral looks way nicer, now that it’s been repainted. All mamas’ eyes leak when they think of their prior Sheltie-loves; it’s just part of the package. By the way, Penny, Monkey has a Blue toy very similar to that! He got it when he was a wee one, and he still goes to it for comfort.

    • Awww Miss Debbie, I’m glad Monkey has a Blue too. I never had a Blue, but I had a PIGGY and a LAMBIE! I loved my toys and it makes me smile that Penny is playing with them now. Well. All except Piggy. Mama put Piggy up near my bowl and leash to keep it safe. I think her eyes were leaking when she did that.

  7. Katie you are NEVER forgotten!! We know you are guiding your sister from above!! I can relate…..Dakota was far more patient than Levi is…..(but…I do think Levi is smarter in a lot of ways…or…I simply have forgotten just how smart Dakota was)……I always think of Dakota and we mention him daily…..one sweet dog isn’t better or less than the other……just special each in their own way. (((hugs))) to Mama.

    • Thank you Miss Caren. I know we’re all special. Mama just has a hard time with change, you know? And I keep telling her I’m right here…but she only sees me around once in awhile. She talks to me every day though, and I know she wishes I was still sleeping in her room and under her chair and bugging her for more snacks!

  8. Hi, sweet Katie! It was so nice to see your post. Of course Little Penny has learned so many things from you already! A big sister has to keep the younger one in line…it must be exhausting at times. Actually, exhaustion is an earthly state…I don’t think you have any of that at Rainbow Bridge. I bet sometimes that little whipper snapper makes you shake your head and roll your eyes. You are not forgotten…Penny is a lovely little pup, but you will always have a special place in our hearts, Princess Katie. Your mama and daddy (and your many online friends) still miss you dearly…but you already know that. 🐾💕

    • Hi Miss Denise! Yes sometimes I do roll my eyes, but then I remember what I was like when I was that little (actually I was smaller than Penny at her age) and I figure I should give Penny a break. She’s still figuring it all out. She doesn’t even realize she hit the gold mine of families. But I know.

  9. Hey Katie, Thank you for giving such good instruction to Penny. Please guide Penny to watch for momma’s eyes leaking. When that happens, have Penny give huggs, and lots of kisses. I’m sure you picked out Penny special for her propensity to do that in order to sothe momma’s leaking eyes.

    • Hi Aunt Beth!!!!! I wanted to say I really loved visiting your house when we were down at the lake, and thank you especially for my toys and the brush and the nice bed you made me out of sheets and blankets!

  10. Your eyes are sure to leak more in the future as Penny continues to grow and show that she is her own girl, even if there are similarities with Katie. The joy of having these lovely four-legged members of the family!
