Saturday morning I walked in one of Katie’s parks along with 10 other people and an expert guide, to see the wildflowers blooming and tour some of the projects the township is working on to make more of the area open to the public.

It was two plus miles of hills and wetlands, lots of little things blooming, and a cold, sunny day. I was very glad I’d worn waterproof shoes, and three layers of shirts!

I had just driven back home Friday afternoon, after five days of camping near the Sleeping Bear Dunes in cold, sometimes rainy, weather. I was kind of tired and thought about skipping this guided walk. It would be so easy to sleep in.

But we were going to explore parts of the park I’ve never been to and I didn’t want to miss that, so I went. And I’m glad I did.

There will soon be so much more of the park available to explore, and I think it will be nice to have areas of the park that are new, without memories of Katie, that can be Penny’s alone.

I can’t wait to show it all to her. They say the bridge from the parking lot to the new sections should be ready this fall. I don’t know, it seems like there is still a lot of work to do. But our guide, who is in charge of all the township parklands, says he’s confident they’ll get it all done.

Meanwhile I’ll probably take Penny over to walk the trails Katie and I used to wander. The last time Katie and I were there she had a really good walk. Where before she had often refused to walk down the big hills, on this last walk, in the fall of 2021, she was eager to go.

She walked much further than I expected her to, and even jumped over a tree branch that had fallen over the trail.

So I have those good memories to ease me into sharing her park with her new little sister, Penny.

The guided walk helped me, too, to see the park without Katie, but to realize she’ll always be there with me, just like she is in so many places.

And that’s good.

Lots of sweet memories. A beautiful place certainly worth getting up early for. I was especially smitten by those little white lady slippers.

That is a sweet walk. Lovely that you will be able to merge the two without one overtaking the other.

Yes, there will be a different entrance and everything. So some of it can be Penny’s park, and some can remain Katie’s park.

I’m glad you got to have a different walk at your park. Did they name the yellow flower as Golden Alexander? The white was meadow rue. (These id’s from app Picture This). I’ve never seen those tiny lady’s slippers! Lucky you!
It’s fun watching Penny’s achievements! Keep up the great posts!

Oh I think they did call that yellow flower Golden Alexander. I remember it had a person’s name in it. Thanks for the plant IDs!

My mother had Lady Slippers in our gardens growing up in NJ, but hers were red. I like white flowers, though, and these are very pretty. Katie’s park and Penny’s park–that’ll be nice to have two special places to walk.

I think when I was a young kid my mom had a wildflower shade garden and there might have been lady slippers. I know she had jack-in-the-pulpits. Yes, I look forward to the new part of the park for new memories.

Loved the Lupine photo, extraordinary … even had to put my glasses on and still it was extraordinary!
In life, we keep traveling, we keep moving, whether we know it or not. You seem to have that concept well in hand, Dawn. Bless you.

Glad you liked that one. I liked the leaves and the texture and the color in it. I love lupine anyway.

I finked out on that walk at the last minute. Three hours for only two miles and no bathroom didn’t sound so good. The bridge you speak of is what I wanted to learn about. I think they will regret having another entry point. Such a beautiful place. I wish they’d leave it alone. More people, more kids, more mischief.

We ended up back at the initial overlook near the parking lot within 2 hours. He moved really fast! Their will actually be two sort of bridges. You’ll park at the civic center and there will be some sort of pedestrian walkway to cross the RR track safely. Then across a small field where the Shiawasee river (quite narrow) flows there will be another pedestrian walkway. Remember last year when we went on the walk and we saw the broken culvert? That’s where the foot bridge will be across the river. I haven’t seen any mischief at this park, but I don’t go often. It was a favorite of Katie’s in the summer because there is shade on the parts we visited. We never went out into the meadow at the top of that second (or third?) long hill.

How special that you’ll have part of this park reserved for Katie and the new part to look forward to for Penny-memories! I’m glad you decided to go along on the tour — the early morning walk, I’ll bet, did your heart good (and gave you some ideas of places you can introduce Penny to). That star-shaped, translucent white flower is stunning. I love seeing Nature wake up! And what a sweet picture of Katie that is, with the sun shining just right on her!

Yes, I’m glad I went. I am always happy when I’m in the woods with my camera. Especially happy when I’m in the woods with my dog and my camera…but for awhile anyway, it will be more peaceful without the dog. She’s kind of excitable right now.

We came back from 5 days in Rome to 2 planned events, over the border in Spain. Sometimes you just don’t feel like pushing yourself, but it’s usually worth it. Glad for the happy memories, Dawn.

Yes whenever I’m given an opportunity to get out into the woods I know I’ll be glad that I took it. Same with trips to European cities! Even if I AM tired!

All that green!!! Love it. New trails are exciting, but I think they are even better when they become familiar. (Maybe that has to do with my dad always getting us lost in the woods when I was a kid? 😃)
Hi Katie! ❤

Haha, Sara. Yep probably has something to do with being lost! I’m looking forward to showing Penny the new trails, and some of the old ones where her sister Katie and I walked for years. She’s going to love both.
