Well not really beyond.

A friend and I were camping in the Sleeping Bear National Park earlier this month specifically to spend as many nights as possible shooting the stars in that big beautiful dark sky country.

But let’s be honest, I took a lot of other pictures too. After all, what does a photographer do all day while waiting for it to get true dark?

Well, we sat in camp a bit. And cooked lovely meals.

We enjoyed the campfire in the cool evenings.

And we got a little shuteye as we waited for the Milky Way to rise.

Of course we also went on a hike or two through the countryside, enjoying the newly greening forest…

…and the wildflowers pushing up from a long winter nap.

There’s plenty to do while you’re waiting for the stars to come out.

I haven’t even begun to process the images of the old barns and the orchards in bloom that we saw. And I still have seven stacks of star images to process.

So there’s going to be plenty to share once I get all the work done.

But it’s going to take awhile.

I admire your bravery. Even with a friend — shoot, even with Monkey! — I’d feel pretty isolated and afraid, camping in the dark woods on a cold night. Perhaps it’s my writer’s imagination, but I’d “see” all kinds of scary things behind every tree. So I’m happy to have found a brave online friend — one I can enjoy adventures with vicariously!

The campground had plenty of people, mostly older couples, around. So we weren’t really isolated at all.

I’ll be at the nearby hotel. Let me know when I should arrive with my camera. 😆 I am not a camper, but I admire you greatly.

I have gone out to shoot stars up there and stayed at a hotel. It’s kind of a luxury. It was nice to be able to go back to the hotel and sleep for hours after being out all night. We once spent from midnight to 5 a.m. out shooting stars…and then I drove back to the hotel and crashed for a few hours, but then HOUSEKEEPING started making lots of noise in the hall. Oh well…

She stayed home with her dad this trip. She’s not quite camping ready. Though tonight she MIGHT sleep with me in the tent in the backyard. If so it will be her first attempt.

Camping in a tent – you lost me there 😉 (I had moved up to trailer-camping and my bones are crying just thinking of sleeping in a tent!) That said, I cannot wait for the series of photos you will share. This is off to a fabulous start!

I would love to move up to a trailer. I was so envious of all the campers when we were in tents. There was only one other tent there those 5 days. It was soooo cold!

I think, like Sydney Poitier said: You can never go backwards. We went from tent, to pop-up tent trailer to trailer. Such a big difference. Hopefully one day you can!!

It was a great trip. Cold though. My drop-dead, not going to tent camp, low temp used to be 45. On this trip it got down to the low 30s. I was so glad I had electricity and an electric blanket! I know…makes me a wimp. But I was a WARM wimp!

But of course you took other pictures. What a splendid trillium patch. Stars that have come to Earth.
