I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

Penny and I were walking around the backyard and I saw him. Or her. It stayed there long enough for me to go into the house, deposit Pen, get the camera and walk back out there. I can’t tell if it’s a frog or a toad. I don’t think I ever knew what the difference is.

Me too. I figured he (or she) was asking me, the landlord for some major repairs on it’s rental unit.

From some indisputable source on the internet: Frogs generally have smooth, moist skin and long legs for jumping, while toads typically have drier, bumpier skin and shorter legs for hopping or walking. Toads also tend to live in drier environments than frogs, which are often found near water.
So I’m thinking this is a toad. Maybe.

Then I started wondering if toads can climb trees. So…..from another surely true source: Yes, toads can climb trees. While often considered primarily terrestrial creatures, research has shown that toads, particularly common toads, can and do climb trees, often seeking out hollows or nest boxes for shelter.
There you have it. The totality of my knowledge about toads, who are very cute and kinda of fun to learn about.

Yes, I think since the birds never liked the skylight look in their nesting box, the toad has moved in.

He or she watched me until I got too close with the camera, then it ducked down behind the front wall.

Given it’s missing a piece of roof and the birds have never seemed interested I tink it is a perfect toad home.

He/she is set for life. I have a picture of a nesting box taken earlier this year and somebody, likely a squirrel, has enlarged the hole twice the size. I’ve mentioned that nesting box before, so I hope I can find that post for a before and after picture.
