How music heals

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI heard a piece on news radio during my commute to work Tuesday morning about how upbeat music helps sad people feel better and calm music helps settle people who are stressed; how music can be used in any number of problem situations to make things better.  True I thought.

True.

And I hoped at that evening’s concert we would be able to deliver a bit of fun, maybe even a bit of relaxation to our audience.   We’d be playing Halloween music, things like March of the Trolls by Grieg, Shadow Rituals by Markowski, and The Fortune Tellers Daughter by Gorham.  Mostly fun stuff, mostly things we could play if we paid attention, though Shadow Rituals was a toss up.  We’d made it through that piece, from start to finish, for the first time at  last week’s rehearsal.  There were no guarantees we could do it again.  On the other hand, as people who listened to it played by professionals have said, “Who would really know if you made a mistake?”

Good point.

We were all dressed in costumes for the concert, a bit of freedom from the normal black concert attire.  Lots of people went all out and were unrecognizable; a purple telatubby, a vampire, the tallest leprechaun trombone player I’ve ever seen.  (The photos here are from last year, I forgot to take a camera this year!)   I just added a big tie and a clown hat to my normal workaday outfit.  I figured some of my customers take us for underwriting clowns anyway so it was fitting.

I’d started the morning with a headache, a bit of a sore throat, and a sense of being light headed.  By afternoon my eyes were itching and I couldn’t stop sneezing.  “Great,” I thought.  Just what I need.  All I wanted to do after work was drive home and climb into bed.  Then I got to the concert venue.  Sniffles disappeared, eyes cleared up.  Headache?  Gone.

And that was even before we began to play.

I think the audience had fun.  We got a standing ovation from most of the audience when we finished.  Maybe they were just glad we were done.  Or maybe they’re our relatives.  Or both.  But I think they had fun.  But not as much fun as we had playing.  I’ve always said, and I’ll say it again, it’s much more fun to be the one playing then the one listening.  Even when listening is pretty darn good.

Our sound engineer forgot to turn on the recording equipment until after the third piece, so we played the first three over again at the end of the concert.  Most people stayed to hear them again, and turns out we played them better the second time.  We had a blast doing it. Tuesday night the news piece on the radio proved to be true.  Music is what’s good for you.

And for me.

Letter to Mom

Hey Mom,

Sunset at the lake

Sunset at the lake

We’ve been thinking about you as all your kids gather in the house you and Dad built on the lake.  I’m sure you two were here too, laughing over the silly stuff, bobbing out at the end of the dock, your toes pointed to the sky, maybe even jumping from the dock for the traditional family photo, though I know you didn’t like to get water in your eyes.

Hey Mom

Hey Mom

Last night we went out to the big water to watch the sun set.  I know you and Dad liked to do that and the neighbors say he went out alone just about every evening that summer after you died.

Heading home

Heading home

It sure was great out on the warm water with the crescent moon hanging overhead.  The sunset didn’t pan out all that well; we only had one pink cloud, but we had a really nice time anyway.

Of course I’m sure you already know that.

Wish you and Dad were here.

Spend a relaxing weekend

On the lake.

On the lake.

Doesn’t it seem like people are stressed more than ever lately?  Frightening sights from all over the world flow into our nightly news every evening.  The economy continues to wallow and we all work harder than ever trying to get by, trying to make a difference, trying our best.

So I appreciate a lovely long weekend filled with nothing but good food and good company.  Here in the United States it’s Labor Day Weekend, when we  celebrate the labor of so many generations before and appreciate those people that worked so hard to build the country we are lucky enough to inhabit today.  It’s a time for family barbecue, camping in the woods, bonfires, boat rides, long walks, and naps.

I’m spending this holiday weekend on a lovely lake in the South where the weather has cooperated and the waters are warm, where the skies fill each afternoon with towering clouds but only a little bit of rain falls.

When I head back to work next week I’ll keep the memories of boat rides and deck sitting and bobbing in warm waters tucked safely away in the back of my mind.  And when that customer demands immediate attention or the coworker calls in sick I’ll pull those memories out and smile again.

We hope all of you are having a lovely weekend as well.  May we all relax and then start again next week with high spirits and wonderful memories.

The start of something Maine

Flying at sunset.

Flying at sunset.

After flying through and over a line of heavy storms, heralding Hurricane Arthur,  we landed at the Portland airport last night.   And this morning we visited the Portland Head Lighthouse. (Click on any photo to see more detail.)

Portland Head Lighthouse before the storm.

Portland Head Lighthouse before the storm.

We got there early in the morning before the rain started.  But there was misty fog out in the harbor.

Foggy morning.

Foggy morning.

Also located on the grounds of  Fort Williams, aside from the beautiful lighthouse, was the remains of the Goddard mansion, built in 1858 by Mr. Goddard who made his money in logging,  it was purchased by the Army and housed married officers in 1896.

Mansion memories.

Mansion memories.

It must have been an amazing house in its day.

Days gone by.

Days gone by.

We also spent a lot of time just looking out at the ocean…

Weekend sail.

…as we drover up the coast and stopped for lunch at the Lobster Shack.

We were hungry.

We were hungry.

Then we headed to Bar Harbor to watch the 4th of July fireworks.  We sat for almost two hours in heavier and heavier rain, along with a few thousand of our closest (and wettest) friends.  Just when we thought we couldn’t sit in the increasingly cold and heavy rain the fireworks started.  They were amazing, it was worth the wait.  There’s something about being with so many people, faces raised to the sky, drops of rain falling on our cheeks, to make you appreciate the fact we live where we do.  The fireworks seemed close enough to touch.   The children in the crowd clapped and cheered.  So did many adults.  We forgot we were soaked to the skin.

Day one in Maine has been magic.

Happy Birthday America!

Last look at Christmas

Main street lit up

Want to see a last little bit of holiday cheer?  Well come along with me as we visit Rochester Michigan, a small town that puts on a show you won’t want to miss.

Santa's on the roof!

Santa’s on the roof!

We visited Saturday night, an almost balmy evening which brought out the crowds and added to the festive feeling.

Doesn't the purple building look like it's smiling?

Doesn’t the purple building look like it’s smiling?

We walked up one side of the two long city blocks and then down the other side.

Street of color.

Street of color.

The shop windows were decorated for the holidays and each building glowed in a different color.

Window shopping.

Window shopping.

All the restaurants and coffee shops were full of happy people enjoying friends and family, good conversation, good food and good feelings.

Massive color.

Massive color.

It was magical.  Everywhere you looked people were smiling.  Little kids were giggling.  So were grownups.  No one was in a hurry.

Shades of fun.

Shades of fun.

Millions of lights were making lots of people happy.  Maybe we should do something similar in the summer.

Holiday sparkles.

Who says lights have to be confined to December?

Green light for fun.

Holiday spirit?

I’ve heard that UPS had a problem delivering many packages that had been guaranteed for arrival by Christmas.  The story was aired all day on Christmas and is still running on CNN tonight.   When I first heard heard, listening to the media hype up the horror of gifts not arriving on time, I figured it was just a slow news day.  But here it is still in the news.

My immediate thought was of the UPS drivers; those I’ve encountered have been the nicest people I’ve ever worked with.  And they work like dogs during the holiday season, so it’s not for lack of trying that some gifts didn’t make the deadline.  Frankly, if you order something within a week of the holiday and it doesn’t make it on time you should be prepared to provide a photo of the gift or a link to a website along with a letter to your intended recipient and I bet that person will be fine with the actual item showing up in a day or so.  In the big scheme of things getting a gift a day or two or even a week late doesn’t take away from the fact that someone loved you enough to send something to you.  And doesn’t everyone really believe that Christmas is about family and friends rather than how many gifts you receive?

So why is this still news?  And why are certain government officials calling for an investigation?  Sure guarantees were not met.  That happens in life more than most people realize, but the world still turns.  It’s not as if the gifts were stolen and will never be delivered.  It’s not as though anyone intentionally cheated anyone else.  It was just a combination of honest, uncontrollable events including weather and unexpected volume.

So how about we let it go.  Let’s just enjoy the time we have with family and friends, and let the gifts fall where they may.

Katie here.  My Mama is too busy cooking and stuff so she asked me to tell you all how much she appreciates your support and all your comments on her (my) blog.

From up here in Michigan, which currently looks like a winter wonderland, we’d like to say Merry Christmas!
We hope you all have a lovely day with family or friends, or just with your fur-kids.

My Mama and Dad are going to have a quiet dinner here at home with Mama’s Aunt and then they’re going to go visit my Dad’s Aunt.  I guess I’m not invited to go visit Aunt V, but I’ll be under the table for dinner.  Just in case someone happens to drop something — wouldn’t want it staining the floor.  Like there’s a chance of that anyway.

So Merry Christmas to everyone!

Love, Katie. (and her Mama and Dad too.)

Santa visits

You’d think Santa would be too busy this time of year to drop in on our little local community band concert.  You’d be wrong.  We have a very special relationship with Santa, and he stops by every year for our holiday concert. (Photos from last year’s visit – I forgot the camera this year!)

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThis year he was almost late!  He says it’s because he was halfway here when he realized he was wearing his Crocs instead of his Santa boots, so he had to go back to the Santa House and change his shoes.

It was a wonderful concert.  Children were invited to come up on stage and shake jingle bells while we played Here Comes Santa Claus.  We told them if they rang those bells loud enough Santa would come.  And he did.  Then the children danced to Rock Around the Christmas Tree while Santa directed the band.  That was probably the highlight of the concert for their parents; you should have seen the little one’s faces.  Priceless.  I almost lost my place in the music because I was watching the kids dance.

The music was therapeutic for me too.  It’s been a long week but it ended perfectly with beautiful music and a wonderful and supportive community all coming together to celebrate.

Merry Christmas everyone.   Enjoy your weekend.
