WordPress Photo challenge: Signs

Many years ago, seven to be exact, I spent a week in New York City as an intern at the Queens Public Library.  It was part of my graduate school experience, and it was wonderful.  Not the internship so much, but the New York City experience.  It was my first time there, and I negotiated the subway from down near Chinatown out to Queens every day and just soaked in the…well…the New Yorkness…of it all.

This week I’m very busy in a different part of the country and I don’t know if I’ll find a new shot that I find interesting.  So for this photo challenge I’ll give you one from that week in March of 2007.

New York City March 07 056

Signs of a commercial shopping center reflected in the windows of the Queens Library.  It made me smile then, it still makes me smile today.

I hope you smile too.

To see other examples of signs go here to the original post and check out the comments.  Or here and here and here are a few of my favorites so far.  There’s still a whole week to post so there will be lots more of wonderful interpretations I’m sure.

If I were you I’d check back at that original post again in a few days!

WordPress photo challenge: Endurance

Endurance..is the power to withstand something challenging… according to Vocabulary.com.  For this week’s photo challenge I could have gone in a dozen directions.  But I decided to honor family farms; my mom grew up on one and it’s an honorable, though difficult lifestyle.    So for this week’s challenge I give you — a soybean farm:

Because it’s beautiful.  And because it endures.

You can see other interpretations of endurance here, here, here and here.

Or go to this link and see many more.

Enjoy.

WordPress Photo Challenge: Fray

There’s nothing quite like the experience of running in a huge road race.  The preparation.  The nervous anticipation.  Excitement builds.  And then you’re off!

Into the fray.

Zigzag

Zigzag.  I thought it would be hard to find a photo to represent the concept.  I didn’t think I’d find it in nature.  I thought of a few places to go where I might find something, commercial locations, man-made places.  I thought maybe I’d skip this photo challenge because I didn’t have time to go anywhere in search of zigzag.

Then I got out of the car this evening after a long day of work and saw that the hibiscus plant is in bud.  And on the still tightly furled buds were…

…zigzagging veins.

Proof once again that if you just slow down and take a moment you can find just about anything.

Right there in front of you.

You can see other zigzags here, here, here, and here.   And of course the classic zigzag.   Or stop by the original blog entry and look at all the comments with their photos!

WordPress Photo challenge: Room

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This past weekend I chose to think of the term ‘room’ as a place or thing that allowed a behavior.  For example, this beautiful tree at the beach allowed the young boy room for adventure.

And similarly, my little tent gave me room to relax.

Room.  It’s a very good thing.

You can see others’ interpretations of ‘room’ at this site.  Or, check out this one, and this and this and this, some of my favorites so far.

Enjoy.

WordPress photo challenge: Split-second story

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We were on Belle Isle, in the Detroit River, enjoying the day and standing out on a fishing pier.  I was talking about the years I used to live on the Houghton Canal way up in the Upper Peninsula where I could watch freighters pass from my apartment window.

We turned to go back to the car and there it was, almost silently gliding through the cool blue waters.

Magical.

Photo challenge: Twist

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Who remembers this game?  Turns out it’s an oldie but a goodie.  Especially if you’re of a certain age.  Those of us more mature have a harder time with it, but we can cheer younger participants on.

I had many ideas for this week’s challenge, including a trip to our favorite frozen custard place.  Do you know how hard it is to take a picture of frozen custard?  At night?  A warm night?  When you’re really looking forward to that first delicious creamy bite of the season?

It’s very hard to mess around with a camera in one hand when the other hand is holding something this yummy.

But I digress.

You can find other wonderful twists here, here, here, and here.  Or go to the link up at the top and see all 400+ interpretations!

I liked this one a lot too.

Meanwhile, my custard is melting.
