Change Is Hard

The gift of moonlight

I went impromptu adventuring last weekend, chasing weather with my camera.

You’d expect to see some evidence of that here.

And you will.

But early this morning I was standing in my own yard, because I failed to plan a better location.

Shivering, feet and fingers cold for the first time this season, the moon seemed stubbornly slow to work through the phases of it’s eclipse.

But then the moon smiled at me, blushing pink, and I realized what a wonderful thing it is,

to be able to stand in my backyard on a cold morning, and watch the moon turn red.

And, suddenly, I wasn’t impatient any more.

I'm a long time banker having worked in banks since the age of 17. I took a break when I turned 50 and went back to school. I graduated right when the economy took a turn for the worst and after a year of library work found myself unemployed. I was lucky that my previous bank employer wanted me back. So here I am again, a long time banker. Change is hard.

  1. I managed — almost by accident — to get out and see the eclipse, too. We’d had fog forecast, and it did show up, but at 4 a.m. it was clear enough to see the wonderful sight.

    • It was an accident for me too. I was so tired when I went to bed last night that I didn’t intend to see the eclipse. But I woke up at 4 and it was clear, so I got dressed and went to stand in the backyard. And the rest was magic.

  3. Fabulous sequence of pictures! And this homebody appreciates how you didn’t have to go anywhere to get those wonderful photos of the eclipse.

    • Yes, I debated as I was standing there at the beginning, because I have trees and I wasn’t sure how much I’d be able to see before the moon sank below the treeline. But I was lucky and got to see it go to full (almost anyway) eclipse before it got too low. That last image on the post was through tree limbs.

  4. It was beautiful! We got up for it and saw it a few different times.

  6. I saw it from my yard, too, but I knew my photos wouldn’t look half as pretty as those captured by others. Such a stunning sight — thank you for showing me the parts I missed!

  7. You pictures are outstanding! (especially compared to mine – which I took from my front yard. Next to a bleeping lamp post… sigh) … https://www.instagram.com/p/Cks4Y6FLa_A/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link

    • LOL LOL LOL. I was in the backyard with the bleeping deck lights that came on if I moved an inch. But I was shooting away from them, and the moon was (most of the time) so bright the deck lights didn’t bother me. Too much anyway. Also there were NOISES of something in the BUSHES!!! That bothered me more than the stinking lights going on and off.

  8. Stunning captures! I was up to watch it, too, and I think I was almost more impressed with the stars popping out in the darkness than I was with the show going on with the moon.

    • I couldn’t really see the stars, other than the Big Dipper and Orion and that red star that you saw too….being in a lit area I didn’t see the millions of stars that I see when I’m up north or in a dark sky park. But it was still nice. I have one shot, perhaps I used it, but they show up darker in WordPress, that shows the almost complete eclipse and three or four stars….that’s my favorite shot when I’m looking at my laptop. I need to lighten it to post it because in WordPress you can’t really see all of the stars.

  9. Wow! I noticed the moon last night, but didn’t know there was an eclipse. Love the red/pink color you captured.

    • It was interesting. I kept hearing it called the blood moon so I knew it should be red, but the initial shots look black and white and it wasn’t until the moon was almost covered by shadow that it began to show red…and I had to lengthen the shutter time to get anything at all. And as the moon was sinking into the trees it seemed to be going faster and faster and I had to get it figured out on the fly.

  12. I knew I could count on friends to get out and photograph the eclipse while I stayed cozy under the covers! Thanks!

  13. Well captured, Dawn!! I struggled with the cold too but I woke up at 2:15am (nature called) and had just enough time to capture it before my camera battery died! Nice to see the phases!

    • It WAS fun to see…even with the cold. I wish I had planned better and was in a place where I could see the entire thing. But I’m glad I saw what I did and I was really comfortable (other than the cold) in my own back yard in the middle of the night.
