Trent, over at his blog, often posts about things that make him to smile. It’s part of a weekly thing that I haven’t been organized enough to participate in regularly.
It’s not that I don’t have things to smile about. It’s just that I can’t seem to coordinate that event with writing a post about it. Because usually the events that make me smile are small, almost imperceptible, and they often get lost in the bigger things that color my days.

But this afternoon while I was weeding the gardens surrounding our house, I started to grin. I have to say they are beautiful this year. And that alone should make me smile.
But my smile for this week was more specific.
So anyway, I was weeding a garden I generally ignore. A couple decades ago this was a vegetable garden but it turned out the sun beating on the back of the garage was too hot, so for the last several years we’ve been tossing in ‘wildflower’ seed, sometimes purchased from the Vermont Seed Company, sometimes purchased from Home Depot.

I can’t honestly remember where this year’s seeds came from, but they look to be mostly coreopsis and zinnia. Most year I totally ignore this once the flowers are up. But this afternoon I ventured in, intent on pulling out some really tall weeds.
The garden wasn’t designed for people to walk in it, so I was picking my way through, trying to do the least amount of damage with my big feet, pushing aside the tall zinnias which are taller than me.

I suddenly felt like I was doing the breast stroke among the blossoms, pushing them aside to move forward in the sea of pink and red and yellow. I thought of my friend, Bob, and how he’d have liked that turn of phrase, swimming in the sea of zinnias. How he probably would have commented on it, and the pictures of flowers growing here.
And I smiled.

“swimming in the sea of zinnia” – that is a great phrase. Friends and family remember can make us smile… From a picture early in the post I assumed it would be a Penny smile, since pups are always good for a smile. Thanks for joining in this week!

Well you never know, a puppy smile could turn up at any time. She tends to bounce in and out randomly.

And smile you should. What you have shared of your gardens is beautiful – and I love the wildflower bed. I’d love to do that with our back yard, but the weeds out there are so prolific, I doubt I could keep up with it. It’s a challenge.

Yes, you’d probably have to rototill it (we did that for years) and amend the soil and maybe put weed killer in and after that all settled down, THEN throw in the wildflower seed.

Penny says thank you very much. Mom appears to be too busy for a lot of pats so she could use another source.

Well, I had two smiles out of this. Like Trent, I smiled when I saw the lovely Miss Penny. But that phrase, ‘swimming in a sea of zinnias’ is wonderful. I smiled at Bob smiling at that. A great post, Dawn. And a great garden, too!

Penny smiles are a given. I was just struck by how much he’d like the thought of the sea of flowers.

Yes, it’s hard NOT to smile whenever I look at all the blooms around at this time of year!

I love your wildflower garden, and I just might have to copy that idea next year (you don’t mind, do you??). I, too, have a place near the garage where the sun beats down pretty warm, and it looks as if your flowers are perfectly happy with that. And just think of all the butterflies, tiny bees, and hummingbirds that might enjoy such a spectacle! Well done, Dawn.

Yes, definitely try it. When they’re first starting out they’ll need to be watered (unless we get another year like this year with lots of rain). You’ll need to weed at least once in the beginning, once you can tell what is flowering plant and what is weed. Possibly 2x. And then it’s pretty much free of work.

Seed heavier than you think you should to get this effect.

Penny weeds like I do – I ponder over it a lot. I was gung ho to do some weeding Monday but the 30 mph winds made me scurry back inside after my walk. Planting random seeds yielded a good crop of vibrant flowers for you Dawn. Years ago, I tried my hand at seeds for the first time and bought Forget Me Nots and sprinkled the seeds from a couple of packets for “fillers” in the backyard. They are so hardy, returning every Spring with such great gusto that I end up pulling handfuls of them out as they encroach near the A/C unit.

Yes, I was pulling up forget me nots out of my beds yesterday. They’re so pretty in the spring but I’m trying to keep them contained to one area. Otherwise they are everywhere!

The rabbits never eat them though. The same year I planted sunflowers, very few survived.
